J-Fest Southwest Results

Four J/24 teams from DCYC raced in J-Fest this past weekend.

James Freedman and Team Miss Conduct carved out a second place finish and did so in great style! Congratulations on the stellar performance, you guys!

Christopher Holmes and Tonja Sanchez-Holmes-Moon raced Bad Moon with her rock-star team, Chris Pittman, David Hayslip, and Victoria Hielscher.  Special love going out to this team. It was great to see you on the water. Team Bad Moon placed sixth, an excellent performance given this regatta was the first time this crew configuration has sailed together.

Team Navy Blue Faded Lady made her second circuit appearance for 2016 at J-Fest. Peter Brigaitis and his Quarantine Crew had a rough first day, but dialed things in better on Sunday and ended the weekend with a fifth place finish in the last race. Team Navy Blue Faded Lady finished ninth overall.

Tim Johnson and Team Gray Wolf had a great weekend and finished 13th overall.

Kudos also going out to friend of the club, Mark Smith and Team After Midnight for their Third Place finish! Bravo, guys!

Additionally, in the J/105 fleet, DCYC member Justin Adams crewed on AYC-based Aftershock which took second. Congrats, Justin!

Lucija Ruzevic Won a National Regatta!

Lucija took top honors with her laser at the 2016 Laser Gulf Coast Championship held at Texas Corinthian Yacht Club : October 15 – 16, 2016. 

This regatta was a national level regatta in which Lucija competed against kids from all over the US.

Next week, Lucija will compete in the final event for the Texas Sailing Association circuit. If she wins at Lakewood, she will win the Texas circuit.

Race One of the Fall Series

With fair winds and somewhat balmy temperatures (okay, it was hotter than heck out there), the fleet kicked off the fall series yesterday with some beautiful racing. The day also held its share of adventures and misadventures!

With fifteen minutes before the start of the first race, Dan Wolf on Scoots had a spinnaker halyard malfunction. While Dan was discussing the merits of the various ways to race without a spin halyard, Pauline Chetelet talked him into hoisting her up the mast to retrieve the wayward halyard. “Send you up the mast after the halyard? Sure, that would be great”, says Dan, rather unconvincingly, “except that I have no bosun’s chair. Sorry” Nevertheless, crew member Mike Barone quickly devised a harness from sail ties and up she went. While she was aloft, the hail flag was raised and it was time to check in. Scoots headed for the committee boat. “Is it legal to check in with a crew member up the mast?” Apparently, it is; although Scoots didn’t have to test that rule. Pauline, with spin halyard successfully in hand, was back on the deck before check-in.

The first race got off pretty much without a hitch except for a couple of over early starts. The second race was a little more eventful. With two protests at the start, it was shaping up to be a little more exciting. As the winds picked up and the race heated up, Matt Harden and crew on Fang found their wind. Fang was really moving. On the wrong course. Oops. Apparently, they had fun regardless of the DQ.

All told, it was yet another day of successful racing!

Solid showing by our J/24s at the HOOD

Fifteen J/24s arrived in Houston to race this past weekend. At the end of the weekend, our four teams secured four of the top seven places. Congratulations to James Freedman and Team Misconduct (2nd place), Kelly Holmes-Moon and Team Bad Moon (4th place), Peter Brigaitis and Team Navy Blue Faded Lady (6th place), and Tim Johnson and Gray Wolf (7th place).

Huge congratulations also going out to fellow North Texans and friends of DCYC, Mark Smith and Team After Midnight (of FWBC) for their stellar weekend and 3rd place finish. Our own Tonja Sanchez Holmes-Moon crewed with Team After Midnight. Congrats, you guys!

Special kudos must go to Team Navy Blue Faded Lady, a team that has competed together on a J/24 only once before. They showed up on a borrowed boat and left with a 6th place finish. Way to go, Peter Brigaitis, Tim Kraft, Matt Harden, and Tim Ponter!

Four DCYC J/24 Teams Headed for the HOOD

After what seemed an extremely long break in the Texas Circuit action, the racing returns with our 5th stop in the Texas Circuit: 2016 HYC HOUSTON OPEN ONE-DESIGN (HOOD).
Representing Fleet 163 are:

  • James Freedman on Miss Conduct, bow # 01, in 2nd overall and 6 points out of 1st,
  • Kelly Holmes-Moon on Bad Moon, bow # 03, in 3rd and 5 points behind Freedman,
  • Tim Johnson on Gray Wolf, bow # 60, in 5th and 16 points behind Holmes-Moon, and
  • Peter Brigaitis on Navy Blue Faded Lady, bow # 94.

This is a debut appearance for 2016 by Navy Blue Faded Lady, as she has been out of commission since May of 2014.  She is affectionately referred to by the rest of the fleet as the “Nuclear Meltdown” and it is great to see her return.

Go Fleet 163 – Beat 21.

1st Place Finishes for Drake and Lucija!

Our own Drake Ditmer and Lucija Rucevic landed 1st Place finishes for Laser 4.7 and Laser Radial divisions at Corinthian Sailing Club’s Rock the Rock Regatta! Well done, Drake and Lucija!

Stellar performances at North Americans by Freedman’s crew on Miss Conduct!

Miss Conduct had a great regatta in Mississauga, Ontario, Canada at the J/24 North American Championships, finishing in the top third of the fleet in 14th place. Great performance, James & Crew!

Per Tim Johnson, J/24 Fleet Captain:

“James Freedman & Team Miss Conduct, Bow # 8, finished 14th overall at the J/24 2016 North Americans in Mississauga, Ontario Canada.  Their best finish was 3rd in Race # 1 (out of 46 boats).  Other boats in the Texas Circuit: Giggles (Natalie Harden – AYC, Bow # 6), finished 16th, and Chupacabra (John Parker – AYC, Bow # 7), finished 34th.”

DCYC Amateur Naturalist Report for June 7th

The killdeer shore birds are nesting again.  Avoid the area near the cone on the high road for a nest there.

We have new guests on the property — a Baltimore Oriole family!!  These birds build nests in the trees thankfully.  Look for a bright orange and black bird about the size of a mockingbird, coming and going from the end of a lower branch on the road side of the first large tree. That’s the male.  Female similar but not as bright. Yes, it looks just like the baseball team colors and logos.
