Europa Cup, Bacardi Race Week, and Winter Series #5

EUROPA CUP, SLOVENIA:  Day 1 of racing was canceled due to high winds.

BACARDI RACE WEEK, MIAMI: Day 1 of racing was canceled due to no wind.

WINTER SERIES #5, OAK POINT: Perfect winds, and a great day to be out on the water!

It’s always great to hit the road, but as we say, there’s no place like home.

It does sound like our on-the-road racers are having a great time, even if the winds are not completely cooperating. Lucija raced in two regattas leading up to the Europa Cup. She did quite well in both, landing second place finishes for girls in her age group among a very competitive group. Nino tells me the races are longer than our TSA races, lasting an hour. They were also squeezing six races in a day at the regattas. So Lucija was hiking around six hours on race days. How long can you hike?

[The Europa Cup is still in progress; check back here for updates.]

In Miami, the first of two regattas was a mast-breaking event. Racing was canceled on Day 1 and some of those who dared go out on Day 2 did so at their peril. Our Viper Team opted out and felt pretty validated about that decision when two competitors came in with downed masts. The Bacardi Cup regatta started Thursday and is wrapping on up Saturday. Check back here for results.

Lucija Trains with National Team of Croatia

Word coming back from across the pond is that things are going extremely well for Lucija. She is training hard and getting a lot of time on the water in preparation for the Europa Cup. Check out where they are training!

Profound thanks to everyone who has helped Lucija pursue this dream! Your support means the world to Lucija and her family.

If you would like to help this young sailor, as well, just click here. And thanks!!

Lucija’s game face

We met with Lucija Ruzevic last night to capture some “game-face” pictures of her before she heads to Europe on Saturday. One of Lucija’s staunchest advocates, Tonja Sanchez Holmes-Moon, joined us, as well. I must say it was pretty cool photographing these two talented and hardworking sailors together.

If you want to support Lucija’s rising star, click here to add a few bucks to her GoFundMe page. And thanks!

Good luck, Lucija! Sail fast!

Lucija’s “By Invitation Only” Weekend with Sailing Legends

Lucija Ruzevic attended an invitation-only event at the Corinthian Sailing Club at White Rock this weekend. The seven kids who won their fleets in TSA had the opportunity to spend their weekend sailing and competing with sailing greats (Bill Draheim, Kelson Elam, Paul Foerster, Kelly Gough, Doug Kern, Rob Johnston, Scott Young) at the Bob Gough TSA Race of Champions. Watch for more details on this amazing weekend in the upcoming Hailer!

Lucija received another prestigious invitation recently.  The coach of the Croatian team has  invited Lucia to represent Croatia at the Europa Cup held in March 2017, in Koper, Slovenia, as part of their national team.

Lucija and the Ruzevic family have established a Go Fund Me page to help defray the costs of this trip.

If you want to pitch in to help send this rising sailing star to the Europa Cup, click here.

Any size donation will be deeply appreciated by the Ruzevics.

Lucija, we are so proud of you!! Congratulations!

Dr. Jay and DCYC on the cover of 380 Guide

We are excited to again make the cover of 380 Guide magazine.  Below, check out Aaron Noble sitting high on the weather rail of Cyrano, Dr. Jay Hoppenstein‘s J/105.

This issue features an aerial shot of the post-storm harbor provided courtesy of Jim & Pat Rice, an image by Babs Hogan of a wrecked Wasabi being pulled out with a crane, and a J/24 starting line by Marie S. Nuchols. For the centerpiece of the issue, Tonja Sanchez Holmes-Moon  wrote a compelling piece covering the disasters of 2015 and how our Club came together in our recovery efforts.

Many thanks to Jodie Prickett and Karen Gradel at the 380 Guide! Thanks also to the club members who supplied the article and the images, including the cover shot by Marie S. Nuchols.

J/24 Preseason Series # 1

January 15: Low wind earlier in the day, and a foreboding forecast for later in the day. These sailors could not be deterred from the race course, because that’s how they roll. 🙂

Race Committee (how we love them!): John Lusk, Karen Johnson, and Nels & Darla Lovebirds.. I mean, Hogbergs….

Old Carpet Pulled from Upstairs

At the Annual Meeting in November, the membership approved money to replace the carpet and refurbish the bathrooms on the second floor.  We took the first step yesterday by taking up the carpet and inspecting the subfloor.  Thanks to Lynn Harpold, Jim Ryan, Pauline Chetelat, Scott Duford and Mark Blanchard for helping out.  The good news is the at the carpet came up cleanly, but there were several holes in the sub-floor.  The next step is to have multiple contractors assess the floor, make recommendations on how to repair and give us a bid.

Because of the hazard the holes create, the east room, west room and the hall connecting them on the second floor of the Clubhouse are closed until further notice.  The kitchen is available.

Hopefully we will have the upstairs floor repaired and carpet down in the next few weeks – we’ll keep you posted.

Final Day of the Fall Racing Series

Today, after an emotional but uneventful annual meeting, the fleet went racing to wrap up the Fall Series. While it is still rough to go out racing without our friend Kelly, it was a beautiful day on the water and the racing was (slow, but) intense!

We got on the water an hour later than we usually would have due to the annual meeting, and the wind was variable and from the east, which meant that a little tactics and a lot of luck would have a hand in determining  today’s race winners.  Frank Heidlberger on race committee had an interesting time setting a square course, with the wind regularly shifting up to 30° every few minutes. Finally, a course was set and the racing began.

The first race was a pretty uneventful four-legged race and although it was tight, Matt Harden and crew on the Viper came in first in both real and corrected time. Dick Peters on Noble Savage was hot on their heels though, with just a 7 second difference in corrected time.

The second race was only two legs (pay attention kids, this will come in to play later in the story), but the wind decided to play fickle with us on this one.  All of the boats made it to the weather mark without a hitch, but that is where it started to fall apart. The wind would, by turn, give some boats a little lift while completely ignoring others. Thankfully, it was a beautiful day to sit and wait on the wind. Finally, at the end of the race, the wind had once again picked up, and it was a tight race between Randall Massey on Shotglass and Dan Wolf on Scoots… until Shotglass rounded the pin (rather than go through the finish line) and Scoots got the horn! First across! By the time Shotglass had unwound and crossed back over the finish line, both Harden on the Viper and Peters on Noble Savage had crossed the line, giving Shotglass a 4th place finish and knocking them out of 1st for the series.

Congratulations to Dick Peters and Noble Savage for winning the fall series and we look forward to seeing you all out on the course for our Winter Series!

(Thanks to Fleet Captain Heather Fahle for this report!)

Wurstfest: Lucija claims first place among girls and second place overall

According to her dad, Nino:

“Lucija got second overall, first girl in Wurstfest Laser 4.7 regatta at Canyon Lake. The conditions were really tough: rain, very light wind (3-5) swirling around 50-60 degrees.”

Right on, Lucija! Keep up the stellar on-the-water performances!!!  😀
