We met with Lucija Ruzevic last night to capture some “game-face” pictures of her before she heads to Europe on Saturday. One of Lucija’s staunchest advocates, Tonja Sanchez Holmes-Moon, joined us, as well. I must say it was pretty cool photographing these two talented and hardworking sailors together.

Lucija Ruzevic attended an invitation-only event at the Corinthian Sailing Club at White Rock this weekend. The seven kids who won their fleets in TSA had the opportunity to spend their weekend sailing and competing with sailing greats (Bill Draheim, Kelson Elam, Paul Foerster, Kelly Gough, Doug Kern, Rob Johnston, Scott Young) at the Bob Gough TSA Race of Champions. Lucija received another prestigious invitation recently. The coach of the Croatian team has invited Lucia to represent Croatia at the Europa Cup held in March 2017, in Koper, Slovenia, as part of their national team.
Lucija and the Ruzevic family have established a Go Fund Me page to help defray the costs of this trip.
Any size donation will be deeply appreciated by the Ruzevics.

At the Annual Meeting in November, the membership approved money to replace the carpet and refurbish the bathrooms on the second floor. We took the first step yesterday by taking up the carpet and inspecting the subfloor. Thanks to Lynn Harpold, Jim Ryan, Pauline Chetelat, Scott Duford and Mark Blanchard for helping out. The good news is the at the carpet came up cleanly, but there were several holes in the sub-floor. The next step is to have multiple contractors assess the floor, make recommendations on how to repair and give us a bid.
Because of the hazard the holes create, the east room, west room and the hall connecting them on the second floor of the Clubhouse are closed until further notice. The kitchen is available.
Hopefully we will have the upstairs floor repaired and carpet down in the next few weeks – we’ll keep you posted.

Congrats to James Freedman and Team Miss Conduct on their second place finish!
Team Bad Moon pulled out an eighth place finish and Tim Johnson with Team Graywolf finished in eleventh.

Today, after an emotional but uneventful annual meeting, the fleet went racing to wrap up the Fall Series. While it is still rough to go out racing without our friend Kelly, it was a beautiful day on the water and the racing was (slow, but) intense!
We got on the water an hour later than we usually would have due to the annual meeting, and the wind was variable and from the east, which meant that a little tactics and a lot of luck would have a hand in determining today’s race winners. Frank Heidlberger on race committee had an interesting time setting a square course, with the wind regularly shifting up to 30° every few minutes. Finally, a course was set and the racing began.
The first race was a pretty uneventful four-legged race and although it was tight, Matt Harden and crew on the Viper came in first in both real and corrected time. Dick Peters on Noble Savage was hot on their heels though, with just a 7 second difference in corrected time.
The second race was only two legs (pay attention kids, this will come in to play later in the story), but the wind decided to play fickle with us on this one. All of the boats made it to the weather mark without a hitch, but that is where it started to fall apart. The wind would, by turn, give some boats a little lift while completely ignoring others. Thankfully, it was a beautiful day to sit and wait on the wind. Finally, at the end of the race, the wind had once again picked up, and it was a tight race between Randall Massey on Shotglass and Dan Wolf on Scoots… until Shotglass rounded the pin (rather than go through the finish line) and Scoots got the horn! First across! By the time Shotglass had unwound and crossed back over the finish line, both Harden on the Viper and Peters on Noble Savage had crossed the line, giving Shotglass a 4th place finish and knocking them out of 1st for the series.

James Freedman and Team Miss Conduct carved out a second place finish and did so in great style! Congratulations on the stellar performance, you guys!
Christopher Holmes and Tonja Sanchez-Holmes-Moon raced Bad Moon with her rock-star team, Chris Pittman, David Hayslip, and Victoria Hielscher. Special love going out to this team. It was great to see you on the water. Team Bad Moon placed sixth, an excellent performance given this regatta was the first time this crew configuration has sailed together.
Team Navy Blue Faded Lady made her second circuit appearance for 2016 at J-Fest. Peter Brigaitis and his Quarantine Crew had a rough first day, but dialed things in better on Sunday and ended the weekend with a fifth place finish in the last race. Team Navy Blue Faded Lady finished ninth overall.
Tim Johnson and Team Gray Wolf had a great weekend and finished 13th overall.
Kudos also going out to friend of the club, Mark Smith and Team After Midnight for their Third Place finish! Bravo, guys!
Additionally, in the J/105 fleet, DCYC member Justin Adams crewed on AYC-based Aftershock which took second. Congrats, Justin!
